The 10th IFToMM International Conference on Rotordynamics will be a consecration of 40 years of exchanging information on research and technological developments in this area. The idea to have a regular quadrennial meeting started with the conference In Rome in 1982. It followed the meeting in Tokyo (1986), Lyon (1990), Chicago (1994), Darmstadt (1998), Sydney (2002), Vienna (2006), Seoul (2010), Milano (2014). It has been a history of success due to the all the advances achieved by Rotordynamics during these years. It developed to a forum for discussions between scientists from Universities and/or research institutions and mechanical engineers from industry, which is a very effective way of direct knowledge transfer between Universities and practical engineering. IFToMM gave the community the chance to be represented by a Technical Committee which is the responsible for selecting the locations of the conferences and define priorities of the area. In these 40 years this committee increased considerably the number of members and the amount of countries represented. Rio de Janeiro was chosen as the venue for the meeting considering the facilities in lodging after all the improvements that were done for the Olympic Games. The organization effort comes from several Universities and companies headed by UNICAMP.
